FA Cup Replays
#1

It seems that that Premier League clubs have voted to scrap replays in the competition proper. Not like we ever trouble that far up but that will ruin any hopes of a replay at Old Trafford that has done so well in the past for clubs like Burton Albion and Exeter City.

It's the FA Cup not the Premier League Cup. So much for the magic of the cup - surely this should be contested?

Greater opportunity for giant killing as it is over one match not a replay? Penalties a leveller?

10 out of 10 for footballing zen

It still provides for giant-killing and if the ‘lower’ ranked side get the home draw they still get the thrill and the revenues. I can see the logic in that it deconflicts the calendar; my issue is that it should have been from the third round, not the first.

This is the Premier League flexing their muscles.

Admin, I think this thread needs moving, what has Gloucester City got to do with the FA Cup proper?

Cray Valley Paper Mills made over £100k out of their tie with Charlton last season.  The initial fixture at The Valley didn't raise any eyebrows, but they got a draw and the replay was then on telly. Had they just got a home tie against Charlton in the first place, there was no guarantee it would be picked up for telly and their ground is so small they wouldn't have made nearly as much as they did.

By taking away the replays in earlier rounds means there is less chance of that happening. Neil mentions Exeter in the opening post.  Without their replay against Man Utd in 2005, they may not even exist anymore.

I agree with Shandy in that there is more chance of an upset without replays, but for some clubs, the money made out of a replay in the first round could be much more important than making the second round and losing to a team from the same division with neither tie being picked for TV.

A statement from Tranmere Rovers - presumably other clubs will be issuing similar:

Tranmere Rovers condemn the disgraceful decision taken by The FA and the Premier League to change the format of the FA Cup, including the scrapping of replays.

There was no consultation with Football League clubs, National League clubs or grassroots clubs to whom the competition represents not only their best opportunity to create life-long memories for supporters but also a hugely important source of income. We also understand that FA Council members were not consulted about the changes.

The decision, and the way it was taken, demonstrate a total lack of respect for the football pyramid and its fans. Football belongs to all of us and decisions should not be taken in back room deals in which only the very wealthiest clubs are allowed to participate. It is yet another eloquent example of the 19th-century governance that means that football simply cannot regulate itself and needs the Independent Football Regulator to have real teeth.

We condemn the changes wholeheartedly and urge The FA to suspend them immediately until all stakeholders in the game are properly consulted.

Football belongs to all of us! Laughable.
Don’t see the EFL clubs voting for more relegation/promotion slots to the lower end of the pyramid do we.

Disgraceful decision, and the FA just bowed out to the rich clubs with its moany managers about fixture congestion. Some clubs have survived on the replay fixture revenue. PL is getting a joke now.

They moan about fixture congestion, but it doesn't stop the likes of Newcastle and Spurs arranging a friendly in Australia 4 days after the final game of the season.
